# Loyalty Points

> Reward patients with points they earn on purchases and redeem toward future payments.

<Info>
  **Prerequisites:** Loyalty Points is an add-on. If you don't see it in **Settings**, contact your Decoda representative to turn it on.
</Info>

Loyalty Points let patients earn points when they buy services and products, then spend those points toward a future payment at checkout. You set how much a point is worth, which items earn points, and when points expire.

## Set the Point Value

Go to **Settings > Loyalty Points** to set up the program:

* **Value per Point** — How much each point is worth in dollars. For example, \$0.01 per point means 100 points equal \$1.00 at checkout.
* **Default Expiry (days)** — How many days earned points last before they expire. Leave it blank for points that never expire.

Click **Save** when you're done.

## How Patients Earn Points

Points are awarded automatically when a patient pays for an item that earns them. Set the amount on each item:

* **Services and products** — Open the item in **Settings**, then enter a number in the **Points Earned** field. The patient earns that many points each time they buy it.
* **Promotions** — In a promotion's **Loyalty Points Reward** section, set **Bonus Points** to award extra points when the promotion is applied. You can give those bonus points their own expiry, or leave it blank to use the program default.

## Redeem Points at Checkout

When a patient has points available, **Loyalty Points** appears as a payment option at checkout.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose Loyalty Points">
    At the payment step, select **Loyalty Points**. The option shows how many points the patient has and their dollar value.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick which points to apply">
    Each batch of earned points is listed with its value and expiry date. Select the batches you want to redeem. Points closest to expiring are a good choice to use first.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Finish the payment">
    The selected points reduce the amount due. Collect any remaining balance with another payment method.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## See a Patient's Balance

A patient's available points appear in two places on their chart: the **Loyalty Points** card on the **Billing** tab, and the patient panel on the right side of the screen. Both show the point total and what it's worth in dollars.
