# Document Types

> Manage the categories used to classify patient documents across your clinic.

Document types let you organize patient documents into meaningful categories like "Lab", "Image", "Report", or any custom label your clinic needs. When staff upload a document, they select a type from a searchable list. Patients can then filter their documents by type on the patient page.

Your clinic comes with several built-in types: **Lab**, **Pharmacy**, **Image**, **Report**, **Other**, **Consent**, and **Note Upload**. You can add as many custom types as you need.

## Add a Document Type

New document types are created inline when uploading a document:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Upload a Document">
    On a patient's **Forms & Documents** tab, click **Upload Document**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Search or Create a Type">
    In the **Document Type** field, start typing. If the type you need doesn't exist yet, an **Add** option appears at the bottom of the list.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select the New Type">
    Click the **Add** option. The new type is created and selected automatically.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Filtering Documents by Type

On a patient's **Forms & Documents** tab, a type filter appears next to the Documents heading whenever the patient has documents. Select a type from the list to show only documents of that category, or choose **All types** to see everything.
