Search CPT codes by code or description, ranked so the exact code wins.
Matches ONLY code and description — deliberately not notes or the
category_* fields. notes is AMA cross-reference guidance dense with
other codes’ numbers (e.g. 76942’s note lists every procedure it pairs
with), so substring-matching it buried the searched-for code under dozens of
unrelated rows — and with a small limit and no ordering, could push the
exact match off the page entirely (76942 returned 91 rows, none of them
76942). category_* are coarse taxonomy buckets (“Surgery” tags ~half the
catalog) that flood word searches. Both columns stay on the row for
display/grouping; they just aren’t match targets.
Results are ranked exact code -> code prefix -> description hit, then by code for a stable order (the query previously had no ORDER BY, so results shuffled between identical searches).
